Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world. It has many problems, all stemming from severe poverty which will not be solved overnight. It will require a long-term investment, with an emphasis on developing children into future leaders with the capacity and skills to pull themselves, the community, and quite possibly the nation, out of the vicious cycle of despair.
Taking Back Lives is a nonprofit organization founded by high school student Cassandra Yoder. We have constructed classrooms, provided student scholarships, assisted in community development and established an adult literacy class in Malawi. Taking Back Lives has an ambitious goal of providing this community with progressive educational resources. With overwhelming support from both village residents and leaders, we are working alongside the people of this impoverished region to develop sustainable outcomes.
In the US, the talent and ingenuity of American youth are apparent in every aspect of our organization - from fundraising events, marketing materials, merchandise, website design, video production and student clubs. As a youth-focused nonprofit, involving high school teens in our overseas programs, as well as local service projects, is a key component of Taking Back Lives. ‘Empowering youth to promote change’ is the true essence of our organization. We are living proof of the incredible ability young people have to make positive changes in the community and the world when provided with the opportunity.
